Fall 2025 First TV Production Project

In my Television Production class, I call the first assignment "Me in 30 Seconds." It gives the students early exposure and experience in front of and behind the camera.

During previous classes, we went over camera, microphone, tripod and lighting operations. And I gave the students tips on speaking on camera. In this photo, Summer Gray is speaking with Dallas Barnes recording her. RJ Steadman is the timekeeper.

Like many things in television production, this project must be carefully timed: as close to 30 seconds as possible. A cue is given when there are 10 seconds left. Reshoots are OK.

The project also involves putting the video on YouTube, so I did that on my channel. Below is the unedited version.

I wasn't pleased with the lighting in the original recording, so with the help of this YouTube video, I brightened it, per this version. We use Adobe Premiere Pro in the class, available through the university for students in classes like this one.

OK, now I have added Summer's name. This in TV news parlance is called a "super." I also added background music from my go-to free music site, Incompetech. And I trimmed a couple seconds off the end of the video after she finished speaking.

The students will post two versions of their "Me in 30 Seconds" on their Blogspot blogs. They will post the first version of their video, then the second version with the supers, music, etc. I think this is a good first project for the class!

This is a screenshot of Adobe Premiere Pro. This is an excellent platform for video production and I'm so pleased that SC State makes it available to our students- at no charge too.
