We recently dusted off one of our department's old Allen and Heath mixing boards to record a series of podcasts.
Podcasts seem to be as popular as ever so this project gave the students a chance to be part of one. They will be writing blog posts that feature their particular podcasts complete with the recording, photos and their thoughts about being part of one in our Radio Production class.
Our communications program purchased three Allen and Heath XB-14-2 audio boards back in 2015. When had them set up in small studios in Crawford Engineering where our classes and offices were housed from that year until around 2021 or 2022 when we moved to Turner Hall.
Here I'm pictured in 2015 with now retired communication professor Gil Harris.
The mixer was connected to my laptop that was connected to the smart board so we could all see how the program was being recorded in Adobe Audition.
The first podcast we did was called "Spiked Sports" featuring four students in the class who are student-athletes on teams at SC State. They are, from left to right, Jordan Simpson (basketball), Aaliyah Felder (softball), Taylor Ames-Alexander (softball), and Joshua Shaw (football).
For the live effect, the program began with several seconds of music, which slowly faded out, then ended with music. The mix at the start was a bit rough (lessons learned!) but the interview was insightful about the lives of these busy, dedicated student-athletes.

Here is another very topical podcast. This one is called "Campus Conversation" and it is 12:45 in length.
Topics include what the school should do when (not if!) it wins this year's Home Depot "Retool Your School" HBCU contest, the plan by SC State police to soon introduce a gun-sniffing dog to campus, and thoughts about electric vehicles (EVs).
More campus topics and current events were hashed out in this podcast. Participants were, from left, Jalen Gasque, Carzell Burnell and Summer Gray. They chopped it up on life at an HBCU versus a PWI, needed campus improvements and upcoming communications program events.

I found doing these podcasts really fun and informative as well. I look forward to seeing the blog posts produced by my students.
