SCSU Communications Graduate Shares Success Story

Ralan Wardlaw Speaking on March 22
What a terrific talk South Carolina State University 2015 graduate Ralan Wardlaw gave yesterday at his alma mater! Wardlaw works in athletics media relations at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

He was in Orangeburg for the softball game between UMES and SC State. Wardlaw also handles media and publicity for the Hawk's men's and women's golf and women's tennis teams.

Wardlaw told current SC State communications students and members of the school's softball team who were present about his life after college.

In June 2016 he completed the master's program in sports journalism at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. His professors there included my friend and former College of Charleston colleague Chris Lamb.

Wardlaw spoke highly of his educational experiences at both SC State and IUPIU. Music to this professor's ears was this comment from him: "What you learn in class is actually very important. Take what you learn and apply it in the field."

The 24-year old Wardlaw is a native of Greenwood, S.C. where he played football, basketball, and ran track at Emerald High School.

While going to graduate school, he says he gained invaluable experience working at the Indianapolis Star where he was a clerk in the sports department. He spent a lot of time answering phones and giving out scores, but he didn't mind because he had the right attitude about the entry-level position.

"If I answer the phones, I want to be the best at answering the phones," he said. This eagerness created opportunities to cover games for the newspaper.

"Be like a Swiss army knife," Wardlaw said of learning all you can in the classroom and workplace, so you have the tools to succeed.

Wardlaw's appearance was part of SC State's Communications Program Executive Speakers Series. Special thanks to faculty members Dante Mozie and Alicia Pryor for the successful event.
I never made Ralan as a student- wish I had!
