Green Screen "Where I Want To Be" Prezi-tations!

This post combines two recent projects in my digital media class.  The student recently completed a project utilized our program's green screens in the TV studio and another room to put together a visual that shows where they want to be, what they want to do, that type of goal or ambition.

They are next going to produce a top ten list using Prezi.  So this post will show them how to properly embed their Prezi into a Blogger post like this.

At the end of my blog post last spring is the HTML code and steps to do this embed.

Social Media Timelines (Prezi)

Here is a look at the evolution of popular social media going all the way back to the mid-1990s with the advent of the internet. What will be the next thing in social media?  Stay tuned!

Just as an aside, a few years ago the Associated Press decided to no longer capitalize the "I" in the word internet. So now in official news and public relations writing just go with "internet." The AP has ruled that internet is no longer a proper noun, hence does not warrant capitalization.  Same with "web" when referring in short to the world wide web or WWW.

"Bluetooth," meantime, is capitalize because it is a copyrighted name.

St. Michael's Church Graveyard Kizoa

Here is a new slideshow I created using the free and easy Kizoa platform.  The slideshow features photographs I took on Easter Sunday at St. Michael's Church in Charleston.

This is a second Kizoa that I produced in class while showing students how to produce these slideshows.

"Imprezzing" With Prezi!

Want to take your class or work presentations to the next level?  Still always doing PowerPoints?

Time to try something new and improved!  Try Prezi.  Here is an example of a Prezi presentation. Give it a test drive. You won't do another PowerPoint!

Prezi is free to use, just go to this site and sign up.
Need some help getting going with Prezi?  Here's a good YouTube tutorial.
Embedding Prezi Next presentations requires going to this site to copy some HTML code.
Follow the instructions and in your blog post switch from the Compose mode to HTML.
<iframe src="your_view_link/embed" width="550" height="400">   </iframe>
Copy this code, paste it in your post while in HTML, then copy and paste your Prezi's unique URL address into the red code above- only the red code and make sure you don't have consecutive
// (backslashes). It won't work with two.
The Prezi URL will look something like this: https://prezi.com/view/9QF9z8i0UrmbqVosMHCi/

Valentine's Day Bake Sale A Sweet Success!

Lots of signage and student support made for a big day!
Valentine's Day on Feb. 14 was a little sweeter on the SC State campus thanks to the bake sale put on by the Communications Club.

The purpose was to sell goodies and raise some money to help the Communications Program's Bulldog News Now (BNN) buy some needed equipment.

And what a picture perfect day we had too!

News Criteria Analysis Project

In my Copy Editing class the students and I are discussing news.  What makes news news?

We are studying the traditional news values. Nine criteria seem to be the expected elements that influence news reporters and editors to cover and include stories in a newspaper or broadcast.

Using the Charleston Post and Courier newspaper from Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019 I have identified a story or two that fulfills each criteria from the news value checklist.  And each report is also identified by its types of story.

Consequence/Impact

President Trump delivered his State of the Union address last night. He covered many topics of national interest and spoke of new initiatives that may have impact on Americans in various way.

This types of news story that this speech could be categorized in would be government and politics.

Snapseed in Just a Snap!

The free Snapseed photo processing app is my favorite tool for giving pictures more pop. A friend in my photography club Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association (CNPA) told me about Snapseed a few years ago and I've come to really like it.

The processing tools I really like to bring in are the high dynamic range or HDR filters. These can truly make images more dynamic with great vibrancy and luminosity. Here are three examples from my recent trip to Chicago:

The HDR effects really work well outside on cloudy days. A little processing in Snapseed and you can produce dramatic images like these:

Comparing Top Newspaper Front Pages

In our Copy Editing class today we are doing an exercise to study and comment about newsworthiness. This in the sense of how newspaper editors decide what to put on their front pages.

Using the Newseum website that daily has hundreds of newspaper front pages every day, I selected three of the nation's largest circulating newspaper in the country. They are the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Front page of the LA Times today

Today's Los Angeles Times front page for Thursday, Jan. 24 has five news stories.

There are three "above the fold" stories. Most prominent is "Trump retreats as Pelosi delays State of the Union." Beneath that time is a story headlined "Cohen Delays Hearing, Citing Threats.” Also above the fold is a report about the just-resolved LA teachers' strike.

The front page is rounded out with a piece about Venezuela's new president receiving support from U.S. President Trump and a column about Tuesday's Oscar nominations.

2019 Spring Semester Begins!

I took this photo during my Electronic Media Production II class as a way to show the students how to import photographs into a Blogger blog post.  I love the variety of expressions!

Photo taken in Crawford Communications Room 203. Teachers always like the front row sitters!

The spring semester is underway here at SC State University.  Good luck everyone!
